I grew up in Europe (France) and I still go there once in a while, believe me Kobe is THE MOST POPULAR american athlete in the rest of the world. They also like Tiger but golf is not as big there as it is here; they can really identify with Kobe who on top of that speaks Italian, Spanish and some French. Go to the yahoo Q/A around the world and ask them who their favorite American athlete is and I promise Kobe would top the list I don't even think Lebron makes the top five.
