It is "La Caixa," and is a savings bank that is commonly seen all over Spain.

Technically there is a difference between it and a "normal" bank.  It is referred to as a "Caja de Ahorros" where a "normal bank" is called a "banco."

The difference between the two, for all practical purposes, is not seen by the members.  The difference is negligible, and I think it has something to do with the use of the profits (banks-private, cajas de ahorros-in theory go to benefit social programs).

A little confusion here!

The Caixa (www.lacaixa.es) is a savings bank based in Barcelona.

Caja Madrid is a different bank based in Madrid.            

(www.cajamadrid.es).

They are both real live big commercial savings banks supplying mortgages and other banking services.

Be careful because some people say they are a branch manager from this bank and want to do deals with you, they are fraud.

Yes of course La Caixa is a real bank. What made you think it wasn't? However if you have had an email from someone you may think is the real Caixa it will be a scam so don't give out any personal details just in case there are alot of scams pretending to be all kinds of banks here in Spain just like in the UK
