I've been planning on moving to LA in the fall to go to school so I Can attempt to become an actress/singer at the same time (I live in Illinois). Even though I really want to be a singer, I was planning on mainly pursuing acting first because it seemed like an easier field to break into it, and I know you have to be in LA to really do any film/tv acting. So I knew LA was the place for me. Well now I've started dating this guy who is an awesome musician and we are crazy about each other and I don't want to leave him! I'm wondering if I should not go to LA if I would have just as good chances of becoming a singer here by joining a band or something, or do I Really need to be in LA to get noticed? Also my boyfriend wants me to be in his band with him, but it's not the kind of music I want to do, it's not what I'm into. I don't know if doing that with him would get me more exposure, or if I should just follow my dreams. So what should I do, should I move or not? Also, if I should,

  1. Years ago, I would say that LA would be the place to go, but today, music is coming from all over the world.  People have access to record making processess from their homes. Distribution is what gets records sold.  If acting and singing is really your dream then you should pursue it without a doubt.  You sound as if you are torn between a man and your career.  Let me tell you, when I left Detroit for my singing opportunity in Los Angeles, I debated also. But my career goals were stronger - and my boyfriend and I knew that in order to allow both of us a chance to pursue our dreams, they might take us to different parts of the globe.  As much as I loved him, I had to let him go.  I never regretted it.  I have lived my dreams as a performer on stage and screen and enjoyed it tremendously.  You don't want to look back and regret that you didn't follow your dream.  LA is a place you can get noticed, but know there are hundreds of thousands there, just like you.  You have to do something that places you far and above the rest.

  2. You don't need to be in LA to be an artist. The showbiz side of things can be harsh and unwelcoming, particularly in a city where people go to to become famous. There are a lot of other people with similar dreams, who may get a break long before you do and without necessarily deserving it. It's not a pretty business, and it's crucial to have a healthy and confident outlook so you don't get used by someone wanting to make money off of your talents. It's equally important to have a strong, compassionate background to support you (family for example).

I suggest that you SHOULD work on music with your boyfriend. Compromising and combining your styles and skill to create something new and personal--there's nothing like it. Besides, whether you move or not, you need as much experience writing, singing, performing and working with others as is immediately available in your area already.

As for pursuing LA or not: It's YOUR life and YOU decide how you live it. You may be able to fit your boyfriend into the lifestyle you crave, but if it isn't feasible... he comes in second place to your life decisions.

    Good luck, lady
