I am asking this for a friend who wants to rent a house for his long term business stay. A friend of his recommended Lapa neighbourhood, but my friend, who's a very prudent and timid person, want to verify his friend's recommendation...So I am here to ask Paulistanos whether Lapa is indeed a good neighbourhood?

  1. Lapa is no worse than any other area, although for the added security I would advise an apartment with doorman. At night don't stray down poorly lit streets and go to places that have plenty of people around. if using taxis be sure only to use white taxis with meters. Lapa is about 40 minuets to an hour from the centre of Sao Paulo by car depending on the time of day.

  2. Tell your friend he should should find an apartment with the help of an "imobiliária" (real estate company). They´ll be able to help with locating the best neighborhoods, understanding the contract and the different options available, i.e. if he´ll make a security deposit, pay an insurance or ask someone to be the "fiador".

This website in English has some tips on Best Residential Areas of São Paulo (I don´t think Lapa has been included in the list):
