I am studying abroad in Limerick in a few months, but starting to worry because most people I talk to say bad things about living there and that its really unsafe. I mean I know every city has its bad parts, but is Limerick really that dangerous?

  1. Like any other large city you will of course find the bad element, just be cautious.

  2. No, it isn't. It's probably the safest city in Ireland .... those who put Limerick down have never spent an appreciable length of time there. It's a hotbed of the arts, for one thing, and not many cities can boast that.

Most of the media in Ireland is based in Dublin, and they only target Limerick  as a way of focusing attention away from the fact that Dublin has degenerated so much socially in the past 10 years.

  3. Is there any place in the whole wide world thats not dangerous any more? Im not from there but my friend goes to college in Mary-i, and she has had a few run ins with some thugs that have tried to assault her and her friends.just keep away from the bad areas and you will be fine! Stay with friends all the time and dont wander round on your own.

  4. No just 1 or 2 area's.STAY AWAY FROM MOYROSS!

My brother goes to UL and he tells me that the campus is very safe. It's called stab city because it has the high crime rate but stay away from the rough spots and you'll be fine. Have a great time oh and just to let you know if you're a rugby fan Munster train at UL. The rumors are exaggerated, we Irish are storytellers and tend to loose the run of things.

    Enjoy Limerick!

  5. No, it's not, it's given above average coverage by the Irish media but it's no more dangerous then living in Dublin or any where else in Ireland.  I lived in the county & moved into the city for University, I never had any problems, ever, even on my visits these days, I've never had a problem.  However, I have lived in London & the number of freaks and weirdos I've met is no one's business.

The gangsters occupy themselves with shooting each other, you've more chance of being hit by a Tesco's lorry then stumbling into a gang fight in Limerick, unless of course you'd like to visit the less then salubrious areas of the city.

I don't know where you're studying but the University of Limerick (UL) has a beautiful campus, on the edge of the city, in the posh bit by the way.

Mary I (associated with UL, has the humanities degree course), not as pretty as UL but has great access to the centre of town - on Thursday nights it won't be a problem to walk home.

And there's LIT, near the Thomond Park rugby grounds, don't know much about it but I do know people who've attended & they were quite happy attending

  6. as long as you don't go looking for drugs you should be ok. people will tell you that it's fine blah blah but limerick has serious problems and you could end up in the wrong place at the wrong time which could happen anywhere but it happens more often in limerick, and if you compare it's population to bigger cities like cork and Dublin then it's violence statistics are horrifying.

  7. limerick city is a lovely place and me son is studding there and says the people are lovely

  8. All cities have some bad areas and there are times that you should avoid too.

Nottingham city centre late at night can be a nightmare.

  9. Just bring a stab-vest. You'll be alright then.

  10. no, i think the whole thing is if u are in a gang family and there is a feud, well then u r screwed. otherwise they dont care baout u and u have the same chance of being robbed etc as anybody else. cant say i envy you going there coz i don't....! but grit your teeth and get it over with !!!! :)
