  1. The closest beach to Manhattan is Coney Island.  Check mta.info, many trains go there.  I think the F is the best ride.  You can combine a dip in the ocean with the Aquarium, hot dogs from the original Nathan's, a ride on the Cyclone roller coaster and perhaps seeing  the Mets' minor league team, the Cyclones, play.  All New York institutions.  Long Beach andf Jones Beach have none of these things.

  2. It is one of the easiest beaches to get to from Manhattan.  You can take the Long Island railroad train which has a train that leaves about every 60 minutes and it takes you to the last stop in the town of Long Beach.  You get off the train and walk about two blocks down to the boardwalk and you are there at the beach.  it costs 10 dollars to get on the beach but if you take the LI-RR train then they have a deal where you pay a combination price for the train ticket and the admission to the beach and you get a discount price.

This link below will give you the train schedule from Manhattan's Penn Sta to Long Beach.

Also you could take the "A:" train (subway) from Manhattan to Rockaway Park and go to the Beach in the Rockaways.  It will cost you two dollars on the subway and the beach is free.

Long Beach will be a much nicer atmosphere and I think you may enjoy it better as it is cleaner sand and water.

But eiher one can be a good choice but the better choice is Long Beach.

Long Beach is a clean and safe beach as you must buy a ticket for ten dollars to get onto the sand at the beach from the board walk and most of the people who go to Long Beach are from the surrounding areas of Long Beach, Island Park, Oceanside and East Rockaway and Lynbrook.

  3. go to rockaway beach, i live there. its free, clean, safe and fairly easy to get to.

its very nice and im proud of it.

  4. Jones beach isn't that  bad an idea either ,It can actually be fastere to get to than LB >and the beach is great But be forewarned if you guys are not experienced ocean swimmers pay really careful attention to where the people are swimming and what the life guards tell you

Inexperienced ocean swimmers have recently drowned off the South Shore of LI  due to rip tides

    How to handle one:

The way you get to Jones Beach is take the LIRR to Freeport and change to the N-88 bus to Jones Beach

When you  buy your ticket at the ticket booth at Penn Station  ask about a combined train /bus fare that the the LIRR calls something like a Sun& Fun Package
