Question:

Is Los Angeles a good place to go to school?

I'm a 17 year old from Suburban NY and I'm graduating high school in January. I'm going away to another suburban town for about a year to go to community college. I eventually want to transfer to a four year school and I'm looking at my options.

My parents want me to stay in the northeast but I want to go away and find myself. If I was just leaving high school for Cali this January I would agree with her, but I'll almost be 19 when I transfer and I need to go out on my own someday.

I like LA because it has two great entrepreneurship/business programs at USC and Loyola Marymount. What do you think about my situation? What do you think of LA for a teenage college kid from New York?

  1. you are out of your tree...if you want to move to cali to go to school, at least get accepted before you make the move...'SC and Marymount are great schools, but not for the undecided-you must have a strong commitment to succeed in those programs, more than what I am perceiving in your question.  Do yourself a favor, 'find yourself' at a school closer to home, at least you won't have so far to hitchhike home. When you get serious, then select a school for the schools programs, not for where it is located...good luck.

  2. This really depends on where in LA you will be staying. As with all cities there are some neighborhoods that aren't the greatest in the world... but that is common. I would suggest that you take the risk as long as you have a support system. I understand that you want to go to LA for the schools, but make sure you have the network that you need personally (something like what you have now is realistic). By this I mean, don't take the big leap out there if you don't know ANYBODY. Not only will this alienate you, but you'll find a lot of stress in it. I would suggest doing some research before you take the leap. What school are you going to? Do they have the program you want? Can you get a job on campus? can you intern at the company you want? etc...

I think you will fit in great if you go to  USC or any college near Los Angeles. I have had friends go to USC and they love it their and talk about how the education is so great and I am also looking in that area to apply to.

    Good Luck

  4. do what you want because you only have one life to live!

  5. I'm looking at USC. It's a good school.

    So my answer is YES.

  6. Those are two great universities, I have friends that went to both and they loved them. I honestly think that you are going to love California, especially LA as there is so much going on just like New York City. Once you turn 21, you are gong to be living the dream up there in LA because their nightlife is amazing! Not too mention you will see all the Hollywood starlets prancing around in Beverly Hills, Malibu, Santa Monica, etc... Trust me, you want to come to Cali bro. It will be the best decision you ever made, plus the education those two schools have to offer are stellar.
