Is Luka Modric pulling a Wayne Rooney at Tottenham Hotspur? – English Premier League (Part 2)
After elaborating on Luka Modric’s worth to Tottenham Hotspur it is now time to take a look at his possible role in this transfer saga in light of Tottenham’s transfer policy. Over the past year, Tottenham have gone from “capable
of winning the Premier League title” to “making it to the Europa League with some reservations”. This shift in policy and rhetoric has been quite visible.
Lately, Redknapp and Levy had been claiming that Tottenham is indeed a big club and that it will be diluted down to a mid-table club in a situation where Modric parts with them. Modric has stated that he is willing to seek a way
out of White Hart Lane but is he just faking around like http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wayne-Rooney-c36736 did at the start of the 2010-2011 Premier League season. The English striker came out and said that he was not signing a new contract at Manchester United.
In doing so Rooney implied that he wanted out of the club but in the end it just turned out to be a major hoax as Wayne signed an improved five year contract at the club which pays him 250,000 pounds a week now. At Manchester City,
Yaya Toure is on 185,000 pounds a week. Whilst Luka Modric at Tottenham Hotspur is on 70,000 pounds a week contract, with these figures in mind, it is no longer a rocket science was to why Tottenham’s best player wants to leave the club. He is simply not being
paid enough.
There is a separate debate as to whether Modric and Rooney or Toure are players of equal capability or not but for Tottenham, Modric is worth a lot more than his contract wages suggest at the moment. If Tottenham really claim to
be serious contenders for the English Premier League, if they aim to live true to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Daniel-c9879 Levy’s aim of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League then they should invest more in their players. Tottenham gained a lot of money from participating in the UEFA Champions
League last season and this amount was further increased due to their progression to the quarterfinals stage of the competition. Now Tottenham need to invest that money in players like Modric and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Gareth-Bale-c14422 to keep them at White Hart Lane.
A good step in this direction would be to offer both their valued stars new contract packages with significant increases in the wage department. If Tottenham fail to do so then it won’t be a surprise to see Modric leave. After
all football is a business now, more than a sport. Players are signed for financial reasons and released for the same ones. Footballers earn their living through the sport and as in any career they are free to change their employers when offered a better package
elsewhere.
Viewing the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Luka-Modric-c22857 saga in isolation of these realities will be unjust to the player as well as his prospective employers. If Redknapp and Levy want to retain their best employee then they will have to increase his wages,
a failure to do so can result in deterioration in the overall output of their organization.
