  2. Are you talking about .mac or the actual email application?  .mac isn't free, no, it's a subscription service.

    Yes, MAIL is installed for free from Apple for your Macintosh computer using OS X.

    The password requested is the one your internet service provider (ISP) requires to send and receive email. You may have missed a step or three in putting in your settings. I recommend contacting your ISP for guidance in entering this information so the mail will come and go automatically.

    Also, have you considered using a different e-mail client application? I use Thunderbird from Mozilla. It supports every ISP and (if you have your login information already) will set itself up to send and receive email when you run it for the first time.
