Is it okay for backing-up very important data? I've heard Maxtor HDDs are failing recently? My own Maxtor failed recently too. But this is the cheapest Portable HDD. Please comment. Thanks!

  1. I'm not a big Maxtor fan. Just as you stated they have always had a reliability problem for years. This is nothing new. I usually use Western Digital or Seagate for my computers. They aren't perfect either but they fail less often.

You can build the same thing they see with only a Phillips head screwdriver. They are brainless to do. Here's all you need.

Enclosure Runs on eSATA or USB 15.99

Hard Drive 250GB Plenty large enough for many backups $48.99

eSATA Adapter (optional, but recommended) $4.99

eSATA Cable if using eSATA $3.99

USB Cable (check the connections before buying)  $2.99

    $73.96 plus shipping for eSATA

    $67.97 plus shipping for USB

  2. If you want a cheap external solution, you can buy an external drive case thats about the size of a cigarette box (2.5inches www.newegg.com) and get a laptop hard drive to go in it for less then what you'd pay for that maxtor.  And it will be faster and last longer.

    Enclosure - 19.00

    Hard drive - 60.00

so for about 80$ you can have a portable drive that fits in your pocket.  Not bad eh?
