Is MDF board a good idea for a workbench top?

with a coat of polyurathane? I feel since its resin and sawdust that it would not be very strong...any ideas?

would be good for a work top because its  very smooth   .....easy to sweep off....might not be so good for a top if working with plants....the water might affect the top

This will be OK if you are not working with liquids on the tabletop.

Just a reminder that the f in mdf stands for fiberboard so the board in your question is redundant. Like ATM machine and HIV virus and GPS system. Just to name a few.

depends on the thickness also if you put cross members underneath as stiffeners dont forget it is a stong irritant if you cut into it wear a mask whenever you cut or drill into the horrible material personally I would use old pine or a hard wood from a reclaim yard risky kit is mdf [make dead fibre] I think deep in the vaults of an old brain it is carciagenic

It will work as long as it is properly supported from underneath. Cheap to replace later if you damage it. If you will be actually "using" it, the poly will just get scraped off.

Yes, it would work. Make certain you have enough support under. Too wide of gaps will cause the top to warp over time.

If it is just a plain top, I would choose OSB and cover it with hardboard myself.

You'll probably encounter a warping problem within a year. If it's temporary it should be fine as long as it's thick and well supported.

I used 1X8s with a plywood cover for a uniform surface.

Whatever you use, if this is for wood working forget the coating, it will be in bad shape after your first project. the most important thing is that it is well built with good support. You may already have plans but these are the ones I used 6 months ago and I love the result.
