Recently I've been trying to burn my MPEG-3 movies on to a DVD but it wouldn't work.

So now that I've changed my movies' format to MPEG-2, will it work if i burn it as a DVD?

If not, what format is suitable for burning a DVD?

  1. DVDs use their own format, called "vob".  Neither an mpg-3 or mpg-2 will play directly from a DVD on most DVD players.  But either can be converted to vob format.

Usually your DVD burner will come with a DVD authoring software package (such as Nero or Roxio).  If you look through the software, you will usually find an option for creating a video DVD.  When you run that, it will take the mpg (2 or 3) and convert it to vob format, then burn it to the DVD for you.

  2. MPEG 2 is perfect, but you have to convert them to .vob files to make them play on dvd player.

  3. Are you burning them to play on your home DVD player, because if your using windows burner the DVD will only play on computers.

Use this burner, the DVDs will play on your home DVD player, it converts all avi files to mpeg4 so the DVDs will play on any home DVD player

  4. As others have already mentioned mpeg 2 is the standard compression that is, and has been used for most standard hollywood movie production standards.

You see the difference is because everyone is trying to be the industry standard, and thus comes the confusion and the reason for users having to convert to be able to use other compression modes.

  5. It should work depending on what dvd program you are using. If you are using Nero then you will need to create a DVD and that should work for you.

  6. Movie DVDs are mainly in MPEG2, so I would say it should be okay.
