Is Madame Giry a widow in Gaston Leroux's Phantom of the Opera?

Where is her husband? How old is she supposed to be in the book and/or stage musical? About 40? 45? Thanks:) xxxxx

  1. Actually, I am recalling the novel and I think her status is not given in the novel. In the novel, he is an aging woman but in the stage musical she is a young woman in her late 30s  


  2. I am almost positive that it says in the book she is a widow. She says something about her "poor husband"...I don't have my copy of Phantom with me, otherwise I would look it up. I believe her husband is dead, though.

    I know for sure in Phantom of Manhattan, she talks about her dead husband...but that is not the original book.

    In the stage musical I got the impression she was about 40-45ish. In the book she seemed much older because she only had three teeth and whatnot. On the stage, she always has the jet-black hair, making it seem as if she is not that old, but old enough to have a daughter the same age as Christine.
