I've heard (off a government travel website) that is has a high terrorist warning.

Is that true? Have you personally been there? Or have friends that have been?

  1. live in Tagaytay City about 45 miles south of Manila. It is a safe place as far as Philippines is concerned, because it is on top of a mountain with a beautiful view of the Taal volcano island. There are tours to and around the volcano, and so visited by many tourists and foreigners. The police seems to be efficient too.

Philippines in general is an inexpensive place to live. Regardless of where you are, though, it helps when you have a Filipino friend with you to help with the shopping. At the market or roadside stands, if they see a foreigner he becomes automatically rich - and the regular price doubles. (That's why my wife tells me to hide when we go shopping). One useful phrase when you're at the palenke (market) and you're surrounded by 20 people every one offering basically the same thing, you say "Ayo ko" (I don't want any) and there's a good chance that half of them will walk away.

Oh yes - the people really are very friendly - just please don't get very friendly with somebody's husband. They're also very jealous :-)

  2. The philippines is a safe place in my opinion.  I have been there (I am filipino mind you).  That being said I have several friends who are not of asian decent and have gone there with amazing reviews.

Alot of third world countries have warnings to tourists just to prepare you for the absolute worst.

I wouldn't personally stay in Manila too busy and polluted for me, look into Cebu or neighboring islands for their resorts.
