Is Marriage Only About Children?

Question

g*y marriages are not allowed because they can't MAKE children .. I have two fathers that, yes, didn't make me, but RAISED me. They have been married for 38 years.

Certainly a lot of people think its all just s*x, but my fathers have not stayed together for 38 years by s*x. It's love, and that's what they've raised me by. I was raised with lots of love.

It's not selfish to marry a person of the same gender. It's not marrying yourself. Just like marrying someone of the opposite gender is not like marrying a stranger.

In the Bible it did not say that just because God created a man AND a woman meant that they MUST stay together. Sure, their purpose was to make babies, but is that all marriage is for, then?

Homosexuality is sinful because they are sleeping with the same gender like they do with the opposite gender. Well; they're not. A man sleep like a man does with another MAN.

No one knows (unless they're g*y themselves) if it's 'love' or not, but for me, living with them all their life has told me that it is love, and anyone who disagrees obviously hasn't known any of them for that long.

If marriage is all about making babies, then why stay married? I thought it was about staying together with one you loved.

Gross...we are made to pro-create, whats the point of being able to do that if you are going to be with some body the same s*x as you. Having a child and sharing it with the other half is a gift and its pretty sad that a woman and a man wouldn't want to start a family. g*y is some kind of imbalance or else there would be no humans - its common sense.

it's much more than love and baby making. In the bible marriage is made for man and woman. The two to join together in the eyes of God. For the two to multiply, yes, But they also complement each other. woman was made for man. what one lacks, the other makes up for it.

A man can't teach me how to be a woman. And I can't teach a boy how to be man. I can look like a man, dress like a man, act like a man, but I'm not a man. The law may say I am a man. But the law legalizes plenty of things that go against morals. Death penalty , abortion, cops allowed to kill etc. But that's the laws of the land. It doesn't really mean its right.

Last time I checked, one dude bends over (or is on his knees) while the other sticks it to him. Someone gives it while the other takes it.That sounds like male and female s*x to me.

but yes, of course its not just about children. its about love, friendship, children, s*x, security, public declaration and acceptance of that love, and alot of financial/legal mumble jumble. but love comes first. people forget that love should always come first.

wats worse is that people are using the terms 'g*y' as an insult. and its not nice...to both the people they r insulting, and homosexual people.

Here's a fun fact: couples (either heterosexual or homosexual) who adopt have a higher success rate at making a functional family than regular breeders. It's because people who adopt are usually very loving and passionate about raising a family.

I don't think a marriage is about making babies or love...

It's a bond of Holy Matrimony isn't it? Why would 2 people sinning do this? That's probably why it is so widely not accepted.

If marriage was only about making babies people like my husband and I wouldn't be allowed to get married.  We aren't intending on having children.  If that were truly the criteria what about hetero couples who, like us, don't want to have children? What about those who CAN'T because one partner is sterile? Should they be forbidden to marry as well?

well, marriage has had many purposes. for royal families it was for having good relations with your neighbors. even before that it was the unit of structure that most of the world's people lived in. and today, many people have many beliefs of what marriage is. i guess that some believe the purpose is to make babies. others might think that it is to be with the one you love. it is a difference of opinion.

I see where you're coming from, but aside from what we may believe to be right, for those who are Believers of God, how can we challenge the Bible? Isn't that what faith is about? Believing and trusting that God knows what's best? God has a reason and purpose for everything, whether we understand it or not. I'm curious to know what "homosexual 'believers'", or "supporters of homosexuality" make of these scriptures:

"If a  lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them." Leviticus 20:13

Also,

"You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination." Leviticus 18:22

If the Bible says it is a sin, how can we challenge that? Is the word of God wrong?

I totally agree it should be about love and only a few people do marry out of love. I think outlawing g*y marriage is a really dumb *** thing to do! Its not a different situation if two men are in love or if a man and a woman are in love. I just think that people need to learn to be more tolerant of other people's differences.

Absolutely not, marriage is not only about children.  Children are only a part of what makes up a marriage.  That's why marriage is a big thing taken seriously simply because of the many pieces that it is made up of.  The Bible did say that the man and woman must stay together and to have children, but now that the world has so many things and is more complex, there are many other issues and matters which still make up a marriage besides having children.  It's still the same idea today, just more things added onto the marriage.  

Just like how you had mentioned, there can be the situation of the married couple not being able to have children.  That is a technicality and one that is unfortunate, but even without their ability to have children, they are still married to each other.

Marriage is about love, and about mutual support.  It's about casting your lot in with your spouse (or spouses, if I had my way), and about sacrificing and supporting each other as well as you know how.  Marriage has nothing to do with religion, unless you want it to.  Well better than 1/3 of all marriages in the US do not involve churches at all, and are done in civil ceremonies at the court house.  

Marriage confers upon the parties certain benefits and rights, including inheritance, the right to consent for your partner if they should be incapacitated, the right to be informed of your spouse's medical condition if they are unable to speak for themselves, and the right to significant tax breaks from the Federal government.  As such, eliminating the obstacles to g*y marriage is important to ensuring that we have a free and equal society.  

Moreover, although marriage isn't just about kids, many g*y couples do adopt or arrange for surrogate mothers, or (in the case of Lesbians) undergo artificial insemination, and so child rearing is a significant part of supporting g*y marriage, as well.
