Question:

Is Matty Lloyd taking over the James Hird role?

James Hird is probably the third best Bomber ever, after Reynolds and Jack Clarke, but he had a habit of diplomatically avoiding games that mattered less to him eg State of Origin and pre season.

Is Matty Lloyd not only taking over the captaincy and the star role, but also the will-I-or-won't I? of St James?

  1. never looked at it like that, good question, well yeah maybe, but i think it has more to do with player management, he does tend to get injured a fair bit, one way or the other, maybe they're just keeping him fresh for the season.

I'm sure if knightsy wanted him to play, he would,  but why risk a proven player now, give the fans a look at the draftees.

  2. James Hird, without a doubt, has been one of Essendons most magnificent players in the clubs history,  but is it fair to put the two into the same catergory. Matthew Lloyd must be under extreme pressure being expected to live up to some people's expectations of him being the next James Hird. He is a proven champion in his own right and should be given the chance and the time to become his "own" captain and define his role within the team.

  3. Matthew Lloyd is not on the same level as Hird in any of the following so he has no hope of ever achieving that.  He lacks:

    1:   Football Ability

    2:   Football Brains

    3:   Courage

    4:   Leadership Abilities

    5:   Charisma

    6:   Spark

    7:   Off Field Presentation

    8    Off Field Brains

    etc etc

By the way 3rd best ever???  He is a better player that Jack Clarke

    I hopes this helps

  4. Matty Lloyd will have a short career due to a hamstring injury that never repairs.

Of course he will be selective, and only play the bona fide matches.

I predict that his captaincy will be short lived, unfortunately for a talented player who appears to be prone to injury anyway.

Historical players that you mentioned, along with Hird, were role models on and off the field, with no hint of scandal.

LLoyd, may be a role model, but the general public don't hear much about his leadership as a footballer.

Charisma comes into play where cult heroes are concerned

  5. i think if Matthew Lloyd got picked to play for the Vics, he would jump at the chance to play, he has come out and said he would love to play for the Vics again.

With James Hird he is not from the main Football states, and the Allies set up was a joke, and i think that was the reason he didnt play, i dont think he was the only one to knock back the Allies
