Is McCain's experience valuable or just another pawn in his strategy?

And by pawn I mean, a gimmick, a rouse, another under-told aspect of his campaign for president.

Let's make this easy and look at the presidency as we would look at any critical job, for example, an airline pilot.  Now ask your question like this:  "Is the experience of the pilot flying this plane valuable or is it just another pawn in his strategy"?  What's your answer?
