So today, the news mentioned that Senator McCain is speaking to GM auto workers on developing a plug-in electric car. But if I am not mistaken, there already was a plug-in electric car that went onto the US market for lease but only in California. The idea did not take flight because auto manufactures, gas companies, and even some politicians did what they could to stop this the electric from hitting the mainstream market. As a matter of fact, the electric car has been around just as long as the gas car. Just Google "Who Killed the Electric Car? documentary" and you will see what I am talking about. So is this just another political stunt and is the Senator lying?

  1. On one side Big Business, the other side the working class under big business.

That why big business left for Mexico and overseas.Less pollution laws.

  2. McCain surely realizes that he has to live with his decisions and probably does believe his way is best for the environment. Unfortunately, he wants a huge increase in nuclear power plants. That simply can't happen rapidly and is most likely not even possible when considering how much uranium is already imported from other countries. That's trying to solve a problem with an unsolvable and perhaps much worse problem. Nuclear power has played an important role to date but should only be increased if no other alternative works.  Why waste even more decades trying to solve the dangers of entire nuclear cascade. They have had their chance. Supplementing bad behavior seldom works, so unfortunately while McCain may think he has a plan, it sounds extremely dangerous.

His effort to stimulate better batteries and plug in electric vehicles has lots of merit.

  3. McCain is old an senile and can barely remember his own name...he's probably still reading that book on how to open your piggy bank for dummy's (also his economic background)!

  4. All polliticians lie to get votes, money or favors.

  5. john mccain may be a lot of things, but one thing he is not is a liar. senator mccain does believe that we need to maintain a clean environment, and he does believe that we need to make this country energy independent. he does want the automakers to build viable electric cars, and one of the ways to do that is to invest in improving battery technology, adding recharging stations, etc.

as for the documentary who killed the electric car, dont buy into the hype. those cars were lease only cars, had a limited life to begin with, and were crushed due to insurance reasons. there are a few examples still around though. the producers of the documentary didnt do their homework as thoroughly as they should have. if they had they would have realized that GM was doing the things they did to limit their liability.

  6. Batteries are much too heavy and their range is too short and too long to recharge, The electric car as is just can not compete...

  7. STOP IT. first of all, did it occur to ANY of u that ur all bagging on McCain cuz of the approval rating of Bush? personally, i'm a bush supporter, but that aside, not all republicans are the same! if u knew ANYTHING about politics, u'd no that. So now its OBAMA'S turn to b insulted. If u REALLY LISTENED to Obama's speeches, u'd realize that he is only a good speaker and is VERY nieve. u can't just sit down wit sum1 that wants to BLOW US OFF THE MAP and say, "I no u don't like us, but i'm willing to put our differences aside and i wanna be ur friend." in real life, sum1 would probably just pull out a machine gun n turn it on Obama. i'm not saying that they wouldn't do that to McCain, but i'm just making a point. I would say that Obama would put our country into a worse position. so stop dissin McCain.

  8. Well first I'd like to point out that the EV1 wasn't a plug-in hybrid, it was a fully electric car.  Plug-in electric cars like GM's Chevy Volt use a combination of electrical energy and gasoline.  I discuss them a bit in the link below.

As for McCain, yes, I do get the feeling that he's more talk than action when it comes to protecting the environment.  For example, he recently proposed a 'summar gas tax vacation' and increased offshore drilling.  These are tactics which will just keep us addicted to oil for that much longer.  The true solution is to become more efficient and switch to alternative energies like electric cars.  At least McCain is talking about that a little bit.

However, McCain also has a terrible record in the Senate when it comes to voting on environmental issues:

  9. McCain has been talking about creating a better battery for electric cars for at least a few weeks now in the news.

An electric car is worthless without a good battery.

A 40 mile range electric car is worthless to me, but a 60 mile could actually help me.

    The difference is the battery.

McCain is also willing to use nuclear power which will help ween the US off of FOREIGN OIL.

Sounds to me like McCain has a plan.
