Question:

Is Melbourne a good place to live?

I currently live in Honolulu, HI and my boyfriend and I are thinking about moving to Melbourne, Australia. I'm looking for some more culture, such as art galeries, festivals, farmers markets etc. I'm in the culinary field and was hoping to get a job at a vegetarian restaurant and my boyfriend is in the spa business. It's hard to tell if Melbourne is the place for us. Are there any other areas within Australia that might be better? And would you suggest us getting a car if we lived in Melbourne? How good is the city transportation? So many questions, sorry!

  1. i dont think you could find a place more perfect for you!!!

like seriously, it's everything you're looking for like art, culture, festivals etc i could really say we're the world's capital of what you're looking for

i would say don't get a car as of yet. Like settle here and only get a car if you really need one like if either one of your jobs requires you to get a car. but i really dont think you will because melbourne's public transport system is really really good. family friends who have moved to melbourne as young 20 year olds seeking more opportunities have described melbourne's public transport as amazing. I highly doubt you'd need a car. Our network will get you anywhere in a short period of time

only problem is melbourne's rent is outrageous...but i've got many family friends who have been fine settling in melbourne so i dont think you'd have many problems

and in terms of finding a job you two should be fine because melbourne's got a high standard of food/diversity so i'm sure you'd be fine and your boyfriend should be too cos there are so many opportunities in melbourne

    good luck with everything

  2. It's ranked the world's second most liveable city and it's a great place to live. What you are looking for describes Melbourne perfectly - it is very cultural and arty, and very cosmopolitan. I think it would be your best Australian city choice. The weather of course is not as good as Hawaii, but it's still quite nice

Transport is really pretty good, especially if you live near a tram line, however most people do have at least one car in the household.

The only problem is that it is quite difficult to immigrate to Australia, you need to pass a points system based on having a skill/qualification in demand. See www.immi.gov.au for the details.

  3. In recent times I would say NO. It is a d**n awful place to drive in and has this wannabe trendy false image hanging over the place. In the real world melbourne is also a dangerous city cos it is ran and managed by underworld thugs. Also the police are wildly corrupt. On the surface the naive believe that Melbourne is a " great" or a "cool" place. That title of the worlds most liveable city is an absolute joke. Originally built on the lucrative gold prospects from Andersons Creek, the city is kind of old and outdated whilst trying to run in a modern and hugely consumer capitalist rat race, constantly competing with Sydney. Melbourne is no beauty spot either. Like so many of these places, for those that were in when the going was good, living is of reasonably high standard, but for a newcomer you will find it very hard. I have never come across more rude and aggressive drivers nor more blatant and shameless habitual users of their infamous licenced brothels, both old and young patrons. How very sad. A very low score on the morals and scruples scale. Added to this, property prices and rents are very high and the weather is about australia's worst. Transport ? Quaint and quirky trams, awful trains and absolutely appalling taxi drivers. Give it a miss ! Try Queensland or Adelaide in South Australia.
