Geographically it is on the south coast.

Why is it still considered east coast then?

  1. If you live in the US, think of Melbourne as being Key West, Florida.  It is on the east coast but along the southern side of the country.  PS - look at a map!.

  2. Melbourne is geographically on the southern coast of Australia, but to the Eastern side.  You could say Melbourne is at the South-East corner of Australia.

It is described as being on the "East Coast", as it is part of the eastern section of Australia that includes Sydney, Canberra and Brisbane.  Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane are Australia's largest and most economically active cities, and Canberra is the national capital, and thus the "East Coast" is used to describe the region of Australia that is dominant as far as population, economy and politics is concerned.

The term "east coast" is sometimes used to distinguish between this region and the more remote cities of Adelaide and Perth, which are also very significant but somewhat different in size, industry, and some cultural aspects.

  3. Melbourne is on Port Phillip Bay which is on the southern coast of Australia.

It's considered eastern because it's in the Australian Eastern Standard Time Zone (AEST).

    The other time zones are:

    Australian Central Standard Time (ACST)

    Australian Western Standard Time (AWST)

Australian Central Western Standard Time (ACWST).

If you live in Queensland, Melbourne and Sydney are both known as southern capitals.

  4. Melbourne is on the East Coast, being the east coast of Australia, including Sydney and Queensland. WA is the West Coast.

The South Coast usually refers to the south coast of NSW, being Batemans Bay, Moryua, Ulladulla, Bega, etc..

  5. Melbourne is on the South Coast of Australia.  Click the link below for more info.

  6. Technically, the city is on the south coast like Adelaide, but the state itself as a whole is on the south east corner of the country.
