Question:

Is Menthol found in cough drops bad for a Chihuahua that weighs about 6 lbs? ?

Ieft the room and she went through my backpack and got at my cough drops it has about 7mg of menthol and she may have eaten like 3-5 not entirely sure.

  1. I am not a vet, and it would probably be worth calling a vet, but a few checks on some sites came up with the one below:

    "If your dog ate 23 cough drops at 5mg of Menthol each, that is 115mg of Menthol, which means his dose was approximately 7mg/kg. The toxic dose in rats for menthol is between 3000-5000 mg/kg, so we are a safe distance away from that. Although this is not a toxic dose it could cause some vomiting and diarrhea."

    Mind you that is for a 35 lbs (15kgs) dog.  They were also saying that the sweetner in the cough drops might be a problem if it is a chemical sweetner.

    Overall best option would be to call a vet though, most will give you the advice over the phone.
