Is Mexican and Guatemalan Spanish similar?

Yes, it is similar... the main difference is  the pronunciation, there are also some words, for example:

Pool = Alberca (mex) / Piscina (gua)

Straw = Popote (mex) / Pajilla (gua)

Car = Coche (mex) / Carro (gua)

... also, for saying "you" 2nd person singular, mexicans always use "tu", meanwhile, guatemalans have three different ways: "tu" is used between friends and family (sometimes); "usted" is used when it's someone older, or someone you don't know, or just to show respect; "vos" is used when you are very close with the person but not everyone uses it, others use "tu"...

Oh... and the food, it's less spicy in Guatemala, but basically the ingredients are alike...

There might be slight difference in the meaning of certain words. But for the most part the same.

the difference basically is accent.

About food, there are similar things, both are delicious, the difference in this is basically that Mexican food has hot sauce.  But still it is delicious.

Every state is Mexico(yes i know Guatemala isn't part of Mexico) has a little different speech, and the food is a little different also. I was in Chiapas, which is right by Guatemala, so, every place has there own delicacies, but most all of them eat about the same stuff otherwise. chicken, mole, fish(and any combination of the three you could think of). The spanish differences are very small as well, sortof like the differences between a native californian, and a native georgian, you will understand each other, but some words are said just a little differently, and some words mean something completly different. Also the farther south you go, the faster they speak spanish. So the spanish you hear in america is actually very slow compared to Chiapas, Guatemala and everything is slow compared to Chile.
