Is Mexico City a worthwhile travel destination?

Question

Me and some friends are spending a week in Mexico soon. We are flying into Mexico City, and plan to spend some time there before possibly branching off to Acapulco or San Miguel Allende (Sp?). We are looking to enjoy the Mexican nightlife and culture. Is Mexico City a good place to spend a 3-4 days, or should we quickly look to elsewhere after a night or two? Anything I need to know as a 24 yearold American guy? Are the people friendly toward Americans? Any nightlife tips?Thanks for your help.

Hi im from mexico city, born and raised. Theres a lot of clubs, to enjoy in Mexico City, and you can go and party without no problem, people have different ideas than usa goverment, but with americans dont have any problem. So if you going to the clubs, you just have to said what kind of musica or enviroment you like to help you. Any kind of music is played in Mexico City.

If you like Hip Hop like most of Americans, Baambata club in Polanco zone is a great opcion.

Absolutely go to Mexico City. It's totally cool. The clubs there are amazing. You can get any type of experience you want - in terms of music and atmosphere.

There are a lot of clubs in the Zona Rosa and near the downtown Zocalo (the Centro Historico), including a lot of after-hours clubs that stay open til the morning. But some of the cooler "in-spots" may be in other neighborhoods. Best to try to find a local who's into the club scene to give you the latest choices. There's also a magazine called "Chilango" which gives some info - if you read Spanish.

I used to live in Mexico City, in the Condesa neighborhood, where there are some cool bars. I remember taking friends from New York City out to some clubs, and they were just blown away. They'd never seen anything like it. Generally, the clubs in Mexico are just way more fun - people are there to have fun. Drinks are relatively inexpensive. The music is all about dancing. Dress to impress - many clubs don't allow in guys who are dressed too casually - tennis shoes, baseball caps, jeans, collarless shirts, etc...

What's great about Mexico City (DF for Districto Federal) is that there's lot to do during the day as well. Lots of historical stuff in the city, very cool museums (such as the Frido Kahlo or Dolores Olmedo museums in Coyoacan), and the ancient pyramids at Teotihuacan. If you go partying one night and want something chill to do the next afternoon (after you've slept in), head down to Xochimilco (pronounced zo-chi-MIL-co): It's a series of old canals surrounded by flower-growing islands where you can hire a flat-bottomed boat to cruise you around. Ladies in canoes come up to prepare fresh meals for you, and there are mariachis you can hire on other boats to serenade you as you work off your hangover.

As with any big city, be a careful tourist. Don't carry a lot of cash or jewelry. Don't be an obvious tourist (pretty much the only people in shorts in Mexico City are foreign tourists). Don't hail cabs off the street - go to a designated taxi stand. And be aware of your surroundings, especially at night. But don't listen to the negative stuff from people who don't know what they're talking about. The U.S. Embassy warning, for example, is talking about violence between drug gangs or narcos and cops in areas where the drug trade is in conflict, such as along the border.

As for Acapulco, lots of clubs to choose from there too. It's an awesome place to get-away and have fun (I'm heading there later this week!). Spend your days chilling out on the beach or doing some other water activity (SCUBA, snorkeling, fishing, surfing, etc...) and head out to the clubs at night. The clubs here can be more casual (such as at Disco Beach). But others, such as the Palladium, are also places to dress up for.

As for San Miguel Allende, it's a beautiful city, but not really the place to go party.

My only other advice on partying in general, be careful about what you're drinking. If you're going to drink tequila, don't get snookered into drinking a cheap brand. Stick to something good (Jimador and Herradura are two quality brands that don't cost that much in Mexico). The cheap stuff will give you a nasty headache. And don't mix your liquors. If you're drinking tequila - stick to tequila (or tequila and beer); if you're drinking rum or brandy, stick to the one you're drinking. Tourists get in trouble when they start mixing their liquor, making them easy targets.

Don't get staggering  drunk a robber will easily pick you out as an easy target.  See if you can find a money Belt to wear under your clothes (to keep the majority of your money and passport).  There are pickpockets (especilly on the crowded Metro).  San MIguel de Allende is much safer, but maybe a little more expensive because of all the gringo retirees living there.

You will love mexico city,theres so much there.from benito juarez airport get the metro(outside) & head for the zocalo(center). loads of music ect..at night,restaraunts bars,about 1-2km is the zona rosa which has all night bars..also museums(too many) & a great park..I talked to everyone in the zocalo..they were friendly... dont take any taxi's of the street though,they are pretty risky..if your gonna use one get 'official' ones from inside bus terminals ect.. same as any city just be alert & you'll be fine...you'll also notice alot of police about too,which are fine you wont have any problems with them. Im from uk & been to mexico(& city) 3X ..have fun!

Yes, I went to mexico a few years ago and Mexico City was great. The only tips I would give you is to watch out for pick pocket's and stay out of back alleys and other potentially dangerous areas. I would recommend 3-4 days and you will have a great time.

if you are in to culture 2 days is fine. You want to party, head to Cuernavaca  in route to acapulco,, spend 1 night there, and then down to acapulco. All places are American friendly, dont believe all the hype about what could happen to you..  you will enjoy it. Mexico city is very very populated,, but there is alot to do,, go to ZOCALO,,, that is downtown  where the presidential palace is,, you can see the indians dancing there and all the vendors, very nice,, i was there for spanish school
