Is Mexico City still surrounded by a body of water?

Or has the population there completely built over Lake Texcoco?

Is there water beneath the city? Is the lake completely dried-up?

Please provide as much information as possible.

Thank you in advance! :)

  1. No, Mexico City is surrounded by mountains (we're settled on a valley), not by water. The lake that the city was built on has dried long since. However, the soil still has some underground water deposits which make it not be firm enough, and some parts of the city are sinking badly because of this.....

  2. See the article below for a very good explanation of what happened to the lake.

  3. Mexico city is huge; you name it, they built over lake texoco and around it and on it.

because of the population of the city. It is likely any water reserves under the city have LONG since been depleted because of the enormous population.

  4. No.  There is still a small remnant of Lake Texcoco, but it is shrinking.

There is some groundwater in the city, in fact there is an archaeological excavation going on near the Zocalo that requires pumps to keep water out.  http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/0...

  5. Possibly 98 percent of Mexico City is on Lake Texcoco. Yes, there was some water reported beneath the city. And no the parts the lake is still covering is possibly only 2 percent of Mexico City.
