No, Michael Phelps has justed reached his physical swimming prime, he is smashing world records. Ian Thorpe was great but not as good. Phelps could be the greatest swimmer ever.

The time Phelps raced thorpe was when Phelps entered a competition he had not trained in, he entered just to race the Thorpedo. Phelps lost, but beat other swimmers who had trained for years in that event.

Don't forget, Michael Phelps is setting world records, not just winning races.  Which means that he's beating Ian Thorpe's best times.

I think Phelps is peaking now. I don't think there is another swimmer in the world who can compete with him at this stage in his career. Not even Ian Thorpe, as great as Thorpe was.  Even if Thorpe had competed in these Olympics, i don't think he would have been at his best, since he has already peaked. But this is Phelps' time, and it is showing.  

The torch has been passed, both literally and otherwise.
