right now yes. in the future he will not be. the techniques and strokes will change through the years and world records will be beaten. it will take a long time for some one to get 8 gold medals in one olympic games and get as many gold medals as him.

The fact that there are so many different sports in the Olympics makes it hard to say who is the best ever.  Track and field had Carl Lewis, who many consider to be the best ever.  Diving had Greg Louganis who many consider to be the perfect diver.

It's hard to say.  Certainly Michael Phelps would be part of any discussion when it comes to this topic of conversation.

You know, this is something i have been thinking A LOT about lately.

There is no doubt he is the greatest olympic swimmer of all time. There is also no doubt he is supremely gifted in the art of the dolphin.

Yet, I dont believe medals should be brought into the argument.

Sure, he dominated the 2008 olympics, but the amount of medals is kind of tedious considering there are so many swimming events.

The greatest olympian ever, in my opinion, is Muhammad Ali.

He won the gold medal, and went on to transcend his craft in many aspects. He was a avid humanitarian, civil rights leader and a great person.

I don't think we can argue Michael Phelps as greatest olympian until we see what he does in the coming years.
