Is Michael Phelps very popular in US?

Michael Phelps is doing so great in Beijing Olympics.

As a Chinese, I know that Chinese people and media consider him as a hero. Even in Athens Olympics, Chinese media called him "Swimming Wonder Child".

As I know, NBA basket players seems very popular in US. Is Michael Phelps also popular in US?

  2. Michael Phelps is extremely popular in the United States.  He has multimillion dollar contracts with Speedo and there are tons of commercials of him on TV (right now). However, whereas NBA athletes like LeBron James and Kobe Bryant are constantly in the sports spotlight, Michael Phelps popularity is primarily celebrated during the time that the Olympics take place.  Other than the Olympics, you don't normally hear about him winning non Olympic competitions unless you are already a big swimming fan.

  6. We're very proud of him, but outside of the Olympics I don't think many Americans keep tabs on him.  I would not say he's a famous as most basketball players.  

  7. Amanda, despite what most answers here might lead you to believe, I guarantee you, a few months ago most people in the United States did NOT know who Michael Phelps was!

    It's been four years since he won at Athens and in those four years, most people who became aware of him then forgot all about him.

    He's popular NOW, but six months ago if you randomly polled 1,000 people around the country, most would not know who he was.

  8. Yes, but unfortunately the big money making sports like football, basketball, baseball, tennis, golf, and even soccer get more air time and are more visible! Their athletes will be more visible. Michael Phelps as well as other Olympians will become more popular and well known due to their medaling in the Olympics.

Stuff like Swimming, Gymnastics, and a heck of a lot of other sports don't get as much recognition as the highly over paid basketball, baseball, and football players do.  I truthfully had never heard of Phleps a month ago but he seems to be quite popular.  Heck, I wouldn't have been able to name a single gymnast two days ago but now I know everything there is to know about Team USA gymnasts.  

  10. he has been pretty popular up to this point, yes. but nothing compared to how popular he is going to be after beijing. he'll be a legend here, especially if he wins the 8 gold medals.

    don't listen to the guy below me amanda. maybe his dumb @ss didn't know who michael phelps was, but i promise you, and half way educated and informed american knew exactly who he was and what he did.

  13. Basketball players are more famous because we really only watch swimming every 4 yrs on the olympics whereas basketball is every year.
