  1. He is a huge star in puerto rico but he has not yet fought the career defining fight that would put him in the pantheon of boxing greats (cough*mayweather vs cotto*cough) trinidad dominated the division in his prime and fought against a lot of great opponents, Cotto is a promising champion but his star is still rising, in a few more years he is going to get to that level.

  2. He is now!!He had one set back with the crash but he's now the man!!

  3. Not yet. With the talent in the welterweight division, Cotto has the potential to probably equal the star status of Felix Trinidad. Cotto will need more matchups against big names in the sport and winning against them would help greatly. I really don't think Cotto's status as a Puerto Rican star will get any higher or come close to that of Trinidad, until he actually faces Floyd Mayweather and shock the world with a victory against him. If that happens, then Cotto's status will start to rise greatly, though he'll need more big names to overcome Trinidad's status.

  4. i dont know about in peurto rico, but in U.S. i dont think he is there yet, he may get there. if he can fight and beat mayweather he could equal trinidad. i dont know if im right but i would  bet today even a past his prime trinidad could demand a bigger payday than cotto could against a common opponent.

  5. 2 more years...

  6. Living in Puerto Rico I will be completely honest with you. When Tito won his fights you heard gunshots all over the island in Celebration. Cotto is not as arrogant as Tito was and is content just doing his job in the ring. Cotto is more intelligent than Tito is because he hasnt fell into the grips of Don king. Although Bob Arum isnt much better. He is the new Puerto Rican champion and is well respected however will never get the respect that Tito has enjoyed throughout his reign as a champion. Cotto must still prove himself with the Big names before he will emerge in the same catergory as Tito.  His fight last night against Gomez just shows that he has hand pick opponents and is waiting for the big pay day. No Big Gun Shots here until he fights the big fight!!!

  7. Tito has more good fighter under his belt. Cotto only has Mosley and Judah. Even when Tito lost they still loved him. If Cotto lose he will still be there champ. Its what he brings to the table.

  8. NO HE ISN'T YET, BUT AS A PUERTO RICAN HE IS WELL LOVE. SOMEDAY HE WILL BE IN THE SAME CATEGORY

  9. Cotto is a big star on his way on becoming a legend. Boxing has become more and more popular since Trinidad Left.

  10. yes , because he is unbeatable , and trinidad got beaten

  11. NOT YET if he can beat margarito in july and floyd  he will defenetly surpass tito.

  12. yea hes pretty much their, but i still think the ricans still love  trinidad more then cotto, i would say out of 5 ricans 3 would choose trinidad and 2 would choose cotto, its just that trinidads personality really helped and cotto is just kinda quiet .

  13. It is very doubtful Cotto will every get as popular as Trinidad.

Tito had all the elements needed to gain superstardom. Number 1, and most importantly, he had a good looking,  undefeated Mexican-American superstar in his weight division whose popularity transcended the sport. That fighter was Oscar De La Hoya. Cotto has Floyd Mayweather, a fighter that is undefeated, but has struggled to win the spotlight. He isn't Mexican, he's ugly, and he is too good for his own good (like Roy Jones Jr.) meaning he makes boring, one sided fights.

Secondly you need to make the fight and win it. I know Cotto can still do this but it should be more difficult than Trinidad's win against Oscar. In hindsight, ODLH is a flawed, beatable fighter. PBF lacks the flaws and the conditioning problems that ODLH had. Even though Cotto may be the better fighter than Trinidad, PBF is miles ahead of ODLH.

And lastly, you need a situation where your promoter can buy the judges. It is clear when you look at the fight, Don King paid for the abortion that was the scoring of the ODLH, Trinidad fight. Like Jim Lampey said at the start of the 10th round, " Tito will need a knockout to win". But he didn't. Apparently he didn't even need to win the majority of rounds to win the fight.
