Is Mt. Kilimanjaro a dangerous climb?

I have not climbed it, but from what I have read about the standard route, it is just a "walk up", BUT at a very high altitude.  Altitude sickness can be a big problem if you ascend too quickly.

From waht I've been told by some ex-guides, it's very easy. Tourist agents make it sound like a big deal. The locals tell me it's all a scam to bring in rich, pasty, Englishmen who all think they are Mallory.
