Question:

Is My Electricity Costing Too Much?

Hello.

My Girlfriend and i have a 1 bedroom postage stamp flat. we had issues with our electricity and gas provider sending up 2 bills in 2 different but very similar names Mr John Smith and Mrs J Smyth (which turned out to be a clerical error) so we had so much issues with Scottish Power we requested a CARD METER. Also known as pay as you go elecy.

now we pay gas seperatly but the meter box for the elecy is costing us on average 28-32 Pounds a Week..which is 128 Quid a month.

I know people who pay 115 pound a month for their GAS and Electricity.. for a 4 bedroom 2 story house.

The heating is never on however the hot water advance is always on as if its not we only get luke warm water.

I turned off a 3KW Element in the cupboard because it was on 24/7 and didnt make any diff. (the meter stopped flashing as much)

I think we are still being over charged..

is £100-125 quid a month acceptable for a 1 bedroom flat with 1 pc / TV / (energy saving bulbs etc)

  1. Sounds like maybe your hot water advance (hot water heater?) needs repair/replaced.  If it is always on, then it is probably not working proper.

  2. You are paying too much. Have you meter checked, by your provider. Then have your hot water heater checked.

  3. We pay about £30-40 a month for an all-electric 2 bed flat. That's hot water, heating, cooking etc.

In winter it goes up to maybe £60 a month if we have the electric panel heaters on too much.

Card meters are ALWAYS more expensive than normal billing. In effect you're paying for the privilege of being considered a poor credit risk as most of these pre-pay meters are given to the poorest people who might otherwise decice or be unable to pay a bill.

  4. Yes, far too much, but only you can control it!

    (A) go to a Price Comparison site to establish the most cost effective supplier in your area.

    (B) Work out what you are spending the money on, do you leave TV on all day? Is the Heating by Electric? if so is it set too high?Do you leave lights on all night?

    Only you can control
