Is My Fancy Take Guppy PREGNANT?!?!

Ok so I have 2 fancy tale guppy females and a few more males (3 I think) We noticed a long time ago (different fish) that we had really small baby guppies that we never bought, so we new they were born there by one of the females. I would like to possibly keep the female separate so we more of the babies could live rather then be eaten by other fish. So my question is...

1. How do I know if my fancy tale guppy is pregnant???

2. WHEN, should I seperate the female, what should I look for to know that they are pregnant enough to be removoed

AND

3. How long will it take for her to give birth?

ALSO: Both of them are looking fat, and you can see a large black looking round pebble thing where the tale meets the body.

  1. it takes a little less than a month for guppies to give birth

so what i do is wait one week after giving birth and if i notice a black area right behind her belly i wait three weeks and than i separate her for two weeks just to make sure she has had them

note she will not have them if she feels the tank doesn't think there is enough cover for them to hide in

  2. when she starts getting plump take her out and put her in a new tank. She should give birth in a month or less. THey're probably both pregnant. You should always have twice as many females as males. So you should get 4 more females. That way the males aren't always following the same female and stressing her out.

  3. 1. Well they will have a larger stomach than usual also right were the a**s(were p**p comes out)is a that pebble thing you saw it is called a gravid spot and those are the babies eyes.

    2. Now would be good to separate them from the males also as soon as the babies are born put them back with the males or the babies will be eaten by their own mother.

    4. For normal guppies they will give birth in a month however it maybe earlier or later than the due date

  4. If they are pregnant: Her "gravid spot" will grow large and darken  as the fertilized eggs develop. Closer to delivery time, the spot will be nearly black.

    Delivery symptoms:

"The most noticeable thing the females do which I spot immediately, is they refuse to eat. This is MY indication the females will be delivering soon. If you watch them daily at feeding times, you should be able to notice which fish isn't eating. Then you know the babies will soon be delivered. Although some females may take in food, which appears they are eating, but keep watching to be certain they don't spit the food out of their mouths.

Other symptoms are brilliant, vibrant, colors in the female, or pacing up and down the sides of the tank. Hiding near a heater or in plants. Perhaps even sitting on the bottom. A female may even have her head pointed down and tail pointed up in attempts to deliver. The belly of the female will become "squared", meaning as the birthing canal drops into place it will have a protrusion from the gravid spot giving the appearance her belly has squared off."

  5. guppies tend to have alot of babies,

so i would guess when u think they are geting a little too boated, take them out, or wait for her to have the babies then take the babies and put them into a different area

you can buy hiding places for the babies so they wont get eaten

    good luck!!

    :D

  6. Guppies are very prolific breeders.  How do you know if your female guppy is pregnant?  That's easy.  If a female guppy is now or has ever been in a tank with a male guppy, she is pregant!  Female guppies can hold sperm from a single mating for up to 6 months.  That's right 6 MONTHS!  They give birth on average every 28-30 days, so that means that even after a female is seperated from any and all male guppies and put alone in a tank, she can still give birth up to 6 times before she stops having babies.

Female guppies have a dark spot, called a "gravid spot" located just behind and above their anal fin, in front of their tails and to the back of the curve of their bellies.  This spot is usually black in darker colored guppies, but may be red or dark pink in blonde guppies.  The gravid spot is always present in female guppies, and becomes visible at about 2-3 weeks of age.  It may change size and color and usually becomes larger and darker as a female becomes pregnant and gets closer to dropping her fry.

Some guppies become very round and fat when they are extremely pregnant, looking like they have swallowed a marble.  Others, especially larger female guppies, don't take on a very extreme appearance and seem to be pretty fat all the time, not changing much before and after they drop their fry.  Some people say that when a female guppy is ready to drop her fry you can see the eyes of the fry through the gravid spot, but I have never quite been able to see that.  What you can see though, is that the back part of her belly squares off, taking on an angular appearance instead of a curve.  When this happens, her vent is opening and she will usually give birth within a day or two.  Some other signs a guppy female may show when ready to drop are isolating herself, lingering near plants or a heater, refusing to eat, becoming aggressive towards other fish, or scratching her belly on gravel or decorations.

Personally, I don't seperate my pregnant females.  I let them drop in the main tank and then seperate the fry.  I find that seperating the females stresses them out too much and can injure them, make them ill or even kill them.  I can always get more fry (too many, sometimes) but a good breeder female can be much harder & more expensive to replace.

P.S.  You should have more female than male guppies.  The proper ratio is 2 females for every male.  That way the males won't harass the females to death trying to mate with them all the time.  The males are relentless about trying to breed and can really stress out the females if they outnumber them.  Poor guppy ladies are always victims of sexual harassment!  The only other alternative is a males only tank.
