  1. No, the machines will have a different number - the change being in the last set of digits:

    x*x,x*x,x*x,5 - x*x,x*x,x*x,10 for example.

This is because they are on the same local area network (lan).

Your I.P. relating to internet access is similar - but for the internet - wide area network (wan).

Your router sorts this out for you, either automatically or as you / your system builder / administrator set up.

For a much fuller explanation follow the link.

  2. If you mean the internal IP address, one or both of them are set up wrong.  Unless you need to forward ports, they should both be set to automatically get an IP address - and the router won't give out the same address twice.

If you mean the external IP address, it's the only one you have, so of course they both use it.

  3. In my house every computer/laptop connected to our router shares the same IP address. This is because they all use to same point of access to the internet. I'm not entirely sure if yours are the same, but its a high possibility.

  4. your IP address is the point at which you access the internet. If both your PC`s share the same access point , then the IP address is the same.

  5. you have TWO ip's one is your WAN and the other is your LAN

the WAN is the external ip and is shared by every client using your router , the router also has whats known as routing to the LAN which assigns a IP to every client inside the LAN

  6. No that is imposible. if they where the same there would be an ip conflict and neither would be able to connect. just use DHCP and let them configure automatically.

  7. No.  The router provides an internal or LAN address to your desktop and pc. Typically the address sent by a router to your computer is 192.168.x.x where "x" can be any set of numbers - usually determinded by what brand you buy.  example: Linkys starts of 192.168.0.1The router takes the address from your modem which is coming in from the outside world (or your WAN address).  So if you where to go to a the website http://whatismyip.com/ it would show you the exact same address for both the desktop and laptop.  But to find out the actual address for them you would need to go click on START then RUN and type in CMD and hit enter.  When the DOS screen pops up type in IPCONFIG and it will show you the computers actual address.  Do this on both machines and you can see the IP's are different.
