Is Neuschwanstein Castle worth the trip to Fussen from Munich?

I am going to be in Munich, but I can't decide if I want to make the trek to Fussen to see Neuschwanstein. Have you been there? How is it? Is it worth the trip? Or is looking at pictures online good enough? :)

  1. This is a can't miss when in Bavaria.  The tale of King Ludwig's odd lifestyle and his mysterious death are interesting, but the architecture, art work and views are amazing.  Definitely worth the trip.

  2. It's definitely worth it because it's one of THE main attractions in Germany, and known around the world. I would only advice against it if the weather is going to be miserably bad, i.e. rain or snow storm.

If you are not part of a tour group, and plan to buy your ticket on your own, expect to wait at least one hour before your dedicated time slot. Depending on your fitness level it could be a 20 minute walk from the visitor centre up to the castle anyway (in summer, there's also horse-drawn carriages that will bring you up there, for an extra few euros of course).

Do not miss to go an extra mile for a great view point to the castle. Most tourists will go there, too, so it will be almost impossible not to find that view point (Marienbrücke). Please consider the current weather conditions. At this time of the year it will be snowy, icy and cold.

From Munich, it should take you around 2.5 hours to get there by public transportation (with less services on Sundays). The major train station is called "Füssen".

Also, please note that the castle has never been finished (and never will be). Most of the rooms are still "under construction"! However, that makes it even more interesting in my opinion. Also consider to buy a "combi-ticket" for the nearby "Hohenschwangau" castle.

    Enjoy.
