  1. yep, we are a true democracy. everyone has the right to vote. we have a system called Mixed Member Proportional, which allows smaller political parties to enter into Parliament if the can get over 5% of the party votes.

we vote for a Party (National, Labour, Greens etc.) and also vote for a person to represent the electorate that you live in.

we were also the first country to give women the right to vote.

  2. Yes New Zealand is considered a democracy. Although some question this with the MMP system where people get into Parliament by being on their party list. The party has a number of people from their list automatically allowed into Parliament  based on a % of the public vote for their party. vote. Some of these people may have also stood for an electorate and actually lost - sometimes quite badly. They can then and often do, take on positions of power. Margaret Wilson has lost Tauranga several times - last time she was 4th - yet she has been Speaker of the House and formally Attorney general.Powerful jobs considering how poorly she rated by the voters!

The other query as to how democratic is when the party forms an alliance with a small party - who maybe has only just over the 5% of the vote.Such as the Greens. They then wield far more power than they were given by the electorate as the Party in power - at the moment Labour needs to keep them happy so they prop up their government.

    Democratic......maybe!

  3. Yes, NZ has one of the most democratic and free systems in the world.

  4. Get a life SweneySteve and go home to USA

  5. No.  I can see that the others have a distorted view of what democracy actually is.  I have dual citizenship with US and NZ, so I can speak about both.  NZ has a voted in totalatarian govt.  There are no checks and balances here like in the US, so the parliment can do as it likes without any challenges from the courts or president.  There is no Government "of the people, by the people and for the people" here in NZ.  To be honest if you read about National socialism (n**i) you will find that NZ is very close to 1936 Germany in the way it administers the Country.  Unfortunately the local population is not tought world history in school, so they are not aware of what a n**i even is.......
