Is Northanger Abbey (from Jane Austen's novel) a real place?

  1. I have never read or heard that it was a real place. However, there are many abbeys in the U.K. which were converted into family residences. It was a perfect setting for this satire of Gothic romances, since many of those Gothic romances so popular in Jane Austen's day were set, at least in part, in old abbeys and places like it.
