Question:

Is Northern France worth a quick trip?

Me and a few friends are taking a very fast 4 day vacation around London (in Nov) and I was wondering if we had the time to hit Northern France. Paris seems a little much for a day, but an area near the England border would be doable.

Any advice?

  1. I assume that you will either take a ferry or the tunnel across the canal, so you'll be close to Normandy. If you're interested in the second world war, and if you would like to see the bunkers and landing beaches of the Normandy offence, it is definitely worth a see. Weather isn't always good, but there's lots to see even when it's raining. You're probably used to that anyways if you're from the UK ;)

We recently had an article about unique places to visit in Europe, and Normandy, France made number 3. You can go to our news section and scroll down to the 30th of June to give it a read. I will give you a link in the sources.

  2. It's fun to go to Paris for the day- I've been several times just for the day to go and see friends and to take my mum there for her birthday. The train only takes 2hr15 from London. Mind you, it's best to spend a few days there.

You might consider Lille instead- it is just 1hr20 by train from central London- you could have a great time there and don't forget that continental europe is an hour ahead of GB so you could get the last train home and it would effectively only take you 20mins!

  3. If you have only 4 days for England, I would skip going to France, but if you live in England, 4 days in France are worth it.

The time difference between going to Paris or just across the water is not that big, specially not when you travel by train from London/England.

If you travel by ferry, choose well which port you go to, some are better than others.

Le Havre was dull, a modern city, but Boulogne has a nice old city.

I think the ferry trip is worth doing, going by train under the sea is not as satisfying.
