If you live in this part of the world, aren't your chances of getting killed in an earthquake way higher and deadlier than say Ohio for instance? Isn't Northridge an earthquake alley?

  1. There are several known and unknown factors are the causes for major earthquakes. It needs very deep and care full study.Just because that area was affected once it does not mean that the earthquake may hit again. Some times happening of earthquake is advantageous to avoid the another major in near future. Nobody is able to predict the occurrence of earthquakes. We can only suspect that these or those places may be affected by earthquakes. But by close observation of natural changes and changes in the behaviors in animals may help you .I have answered for several person about the changes that may be noticed before an earthquakes. Understand it.Time being using the earthquake alarm is only the alternative way to save the life.

  2. Actually the "BIG one" is more likely now to hit northern CA where I live. (The Bay Area) It's the Hayward fault line that has the most built up stress on it now and is due for a big quake pretty soon. The North-ridge fault just had a lot of energy released when the last quake hit down there in 1994.

Added: The Loma Prieta hit up here back in 1989 but it was on the other major fault line. (The San Andreas) That's why the Hayward fault is now the most likely place. Go to this link to read about both quakes. (There's a link at the end to the North Ridge quake.)

  3. Well of course the odds of an earthquake hitting California (not just Northridge) are going to be higher than some location that doesn't have any faults.  But at the same time, California rarely sees tornado or hurricane activity.

Anywhere you live, there is going to be potential for disaster.  That's the risk you take by existing on planet Earth.  Nature is unpredictable.  Whether you are in Northridge or somewhere else, you just have to work with nature and educate yourself on how to best deal with natural disasters.  That's why you don't see a lot of houses in California built out of bricks or stone, and not many houses have basements.  Thus, there isn't a lot of heavy material that might fall on you in an earthquake.  In other parts of the country, you'll find basements and heavy building materials that can withstand high winds and heavy precipitation.

  4. Not really..California is
