If not, why does the American media keep refering to him as Negro and Black?

He is a Senator and a Human...is that good enough?

  1. Hi: Not being smart here, but is anyone (today), 100% of anything.,   To me he is is a bright Americian, and that's all that matters.   All the best ............... john t

  2. he is half Kenyan half Irish thats mean he is half African American half Irish American hes not a 100% African American

  3. Yes, it is 'good enough'.   The emphasis on this (in the news that I bother with) is a very POSITIVE emphasis, in that he is first to reach such an achievement.  When such a milestone is reached, commentary on it, is not meant in a derogatory way.  News is news. Among the other comments I heard yesterday.. it is not him, making an over emphasis on this. But, it would be unrealistic to simply ignore it, at least at this point in our history.

In genealogical terms, this group/ area tends to have more focus on identifying a person's ethnic background. (your question did get placed in genealogy, which may not be where you intended).  More often, we here define African American as a person who is now American, but has ancestry from slavery, and African in particular.  He does not fit that narrow description, since his father is from Africa in more recent times. His mother does not have any African ancestry to my knowledge.

Overall.. from one perspective, there are so few "100%" anythings left in the world, and we may reach the time when that is not even a focus.  The exception would probably be genealogy, where the goal is locating the ancestry, as well as their place of origin.
