They're trying to create as much speculation, tension and general attention for their choice as possible.  It wouldn't surprise me if they made their announcement at the start of halftime of the gold medal basketball game, so all the networks can cut to the breaking story, he's guaranteed a large audience, paying attention, while not pissing off fans by interrupting the actual game.

    The only "delay" has been them waiting until the moment of maximum impact, while milking it for talk about THEM the whole time.

    Me?  I really don't care.
