  1. any month is a good month to visit NZ really depending what exactly you are wanting to do whilst your here.

October is a good month because as someone already mentioned it won't be too hot but will definetly be warming up, the trees will be blossoming and lambs and ducklings will be present (i love spring!)

There are several different ways you could get around, busing either independently or as part of a tour i.e kiwi experience or magic bus. The advantage of going with kiw experience or magic bus is that all your accomodation / route planning would be taken care of, however you wouldn't have as much flexibility regarding how long you wnated to stay places etc.

Renting a car would be very expensive but would allow you maximum flexibilty, purchasing a car probably not a good option for only a month, it'd be more effort than its worth trying to find a decent cheap one and then re-sell at the end.

If your wanting to fit in both the North and the south island then you'd need to catch the ferry from Picton to Wellington, or fly maybe from Nelson to Wellington. would be worth taking the ferry as the sounds are a magical place and you often get to see dolphins.

well good luck with however you choose to plan your trip and enjoy NZ be sure to pack a mixture of warm and summery clothes just in case :-)

  2. Honestly, October can be yuk. It isn't always, but the weather tends to be most settled between January and May, which is late summer and autumn here, and beautiful vegetationwise (looks like Indian Summer in Canada, at least down here in Otago).

If you do go in October, pack like you would for a visit in the UK in February. That's the closest comparison.

  3. Yes - it's just coming into the warm weather, but not too hot.  (I am basing this on top of the South Island, Nelson for example)

Best way would be by bus - meet heaps of other backpackers and travellers on the way.

    eg: The Kiwi Experaince http://www.kiwiexperience.com

They have heaps of bus passes to choose from which allows you to hop on and off the bus when ever you feel like it for one price.

  4. Yup October is a good time to come over. Wat island would you be going to? or both? if your game enough you could hitch hike around, my mate did and she had no problems with people.

Or bike lol. It all depends on how you want to really. Catch buses to different towns.... buy a car or rent 1 but that would probly be the expensiv option i guess, looking at the way the price of petrol is going over here anyway haha.

Get a van and live out of it?

  5. it all depends on where you want to go and what sites you wish to see, from september to around mid november the weather is for the most part unpredictable it can be warm/hot one minute but that could all change with the blink of an eye...... spring in my opinion is not one of the best months for touring (unless of course your ok with unpredictability). The beginning of summer (around the end of november) would be a good time as that is when the temperature starts to climb but is not too hot.

The best sites are always those that are off the beaten track so if your a person who loves sponteneity and getting into the nooks n crannys of a country then I recommend a cheap runabout that can be sold at the end of your visit...... however if your on a tight budget then their are buses trains and planes? that run daily not to mention hitching (not recommended).

  6. october is a bit wet i reckon bout november mid and you can do it for free click here http://comp.expedia.co.nz/ref/16755

  7. October is not the best weather but would be quiet I think.  It's too late for skiing and too early for many summer activities, but for general travelling/sightseeing would be really great.

  8. november december is a better time. more sun, more fun!

i live in the north island so if you wanted to get around you could probably hire a camper van for pretty cheap. my mates done it and they loved it! october is alright if you dont like hot weather, but new zealand on average in summer is usually only 30+ degrees anyway unless you go to hawkes bay and its a whole 10 degreesw hotter

  9. October should be a good time.It is starting to warm up going into summer.Although there are no guarantees. Our weather is quite changeable from year to year, especially the last few years. So come prepared with a warm jumper, and rain gear.November is usually windy, and that can sometimes come early.Around Canterbury can often be warm as they get a Nor wester wind.

You can either travel with a bus pass which works out quite cheaply. You pay a set price and get on and off as you like.

    Look at http://www.holidays-in-newzealand.com/ne...

Trains are not suitable for all of New Zealand, but there are some nice trips for parts of the country. Look at the rail travel section at http://www.holidays-in-newzealand.com for ideas.

You could hire a car or campervan but this would be more expensive and the cost of petrol could well be over $2.00 a litre by October.

You do not say your age. There are tours - although I find tours a little limiting. Better to travel by bus and do day tours when it suits. You will find there are several companies especially popular with young people such as http://www.magicbus.co.nz

Here are a few to check out.

Good luck and enjoy your New Zealand holiday.
