  1. Open Wednesday, BUT CLOSED FRIDAY!

Another late call by the school board says that we are not going to have school Friday!

But I just found it for you.

Schools are in session on August 20

Public schools in Orange County will resume normal operations on Wednesday, August 20. Based on weather expert forecasts for tornado warnings to expire on August 19, tolerable wind speeds on the 20th and diminishing rainfall, all classes and school-sponsored events will resume normal schedules on August 20.

If the weather forecasts cause any change in our plans, parents and employees will be contacted by phone.

The school day lost on Tuesday will be made up on Friday, October 17, 2008.

This is the time of year that all Floridians watch the weather, especially when a tropical storm or hurricane threatens the community.  This is how you'll know whether or not the school day is affected:

       1. Listen for Connect-ED messages.  This is the automated calling system that is used by the district and schools to notify parents and employees of upcoming events or for emergency information.  It's critical that your correct phone number is on file so the system can reach you.

       2. Watch or listen to media reports.  The district will notify media outlets immediately if there is news about schools closing due to severe weather, and when the schools will reopen.  Our official media partner is Central Florida News 13; however, we alert all radio and television stations and print media when important news is released.

       3. Look at the home page of the district's Web site at www.ocps.net.  We'll post any information about schools closing due to the weather, and when schools will reopen.

       4. Call the district's Emergency Information Line at 407.318.3000.  This line is updated with the latest information.

Makeup days for school closures are listed on page two of the 2008-09 School Year Calendar.

Success is synonymous with our school system. We have seen outstanding results from our students and by the entire Orange County Public Schools’ team. Because of their hard work, OCPS has 126 high-performing schools (those earning 'A' and 'B' grades) and the district received an 'A' grade from the Florida Department of Education in 2008.

Also in 2008, 13 of our high schools made the "Top of the Class" list published by Newsweek magazine. This honor means that they are in the top 5 percent of public high schools in the nation based on the rigor of their curriculum and coursework.

We know there will be times when you have questions about our school system. Here we have consolidated information that will be of greatest interest to parents on topics ranging from school calendars to the dress code. You can also search for additional topics at the top of the page.
