Question:

Is Original Sin really a biblical concept?

Aren't there several passages that contradict the idea that humanity is born sinful, or that we inherit sin from Adam?

Could you list those passages?

  1. The bible is nothing but a big contradiction.  I do not feel like writing a 1000 page research paper tonight.  Maybe next time.

  2. Its a stretch.

Read the passages onwhich the doctrine is based eg Romans 5:12-21 and you will find it talks of those after Adam who had not sinned, hence nullifying the concept of universal original sin.

Like most things Christian, it is an ignorant dogma used mainly to beat people up with.

  3. Catholicism dreamed up this phrase. This is not scriptural.

    One must consider the source!

  4. the term original sin might not be in the bible, but the first and every sin fall under disobedience.so you could say that the original sin was disobedience.

  5. First of all the one i can think of is this,it's found at Romans 5:12 it says; Wherefore, as by one man sin entered the world, and  death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

So as you can see that sin was passed on through Adam as an inheritance, Adam and Eve were created perfect, but after they transgressed they were no longer perfect, so they could not pass on to their offspring what they no longer had.

  6. It is an unbiblical concept. It was formulated by Augustine, around 400 AD.

It is based on a mistranslation of Romans 5:12 in the Latin Vulgate Bible. The Greek has a particular rule about how the subject of the sentence relates to the rest of the clause, as well as the idiomatic use of the phrase "eph o" ("because of which").

The Latin, while similar, has no such restrictions, leading Jerome to assume the exact opposite meaning of the verse. The King James Version correctly translated the passage, but left the expression "for that" ambiguous enough that it could be interpreted as "because of that" or simply  "because."  Protestant readers followed the latter meaning, and thus retained the idea of Original Sin.

Romans 5:12 tells us that sin came into the world when Adam disobeyed God. The result of that sin was spiritual death - separation from God. The verse goes on to tell us that everyone since then has also sinned.

It does not say that we inherited sin from Adam. That's an assumption that is forced into the text.

In John 3:7 Jesus said "Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit." In other words - when we are born, we aren't spiritual.

Without a spiritual connection to God, we follow the impulses of our bodies. We do what feels good. There is nothing inherently sinful about our emotions or bodily pleasures. Sin is a commitment to what pleases us without regard to God's will.

Since we begin at birth to do what comes naturally - fulfilling our physical needs - we learn to commit ourselves to our own pleasure. As we grow and begin to become aware that there is something called "right and wrong", that's when we become aware that we have been seeking self-fulfillment instead of God's honor.

    That's when we face temptation.

James 2:14-15 says "each one is tempted when, by his own desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death."

Notice that the temptation comes first. It leads to sin, and sin results in death.

We do not begin with a sin nature.

Ezekiel 18:19-20; "Yet you ask, 'Why does the son not share the guilt of his father?' Since the son has done what is just and right and has been careful to keep all my decrees, he will surely live. The soul who sins is the one who will die. The son will not share the guilt of the father, nor will the father share the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous man will be credited to him, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against him".

  7. Think about it for a minute.

If the original sin was a piece of fiction, then the relief from that sin would not be needed.

The whole history recorded in the Bible, directing the attention to a coming Messiah or Christ, as that means of relief would have been useless. The death of Jesus would be useless, and as Paul said anyone hoping would be the ones "most to be pitied".

There is only one reason for that sacrifice, to resolve the issues of that sin by Adam.

There are no scriptures that contradict the need for relief.

If there was a human not affected by that sin, he would be prefect, and being sinless, not condemned to death. In effect, having everlasting life. There is no immortals living among us.

  8. the Bible does not contradict itself. It is the Word of God and is always truthful.

  9. Not in the Bible. See 1John 1:8,9

When man violated Gods command and listened to another source for his information his connection to God was breached. This caused 3 problems to be reconciled to God.

There is a theme that starts in Gen 3 and builds throughout the scriptures.

1- Salvation must be of the Lord.-

2- It must be by the death of an innocent substitute...

3- It must be by blood.

The rest is up to your decision if you believe God or not- if so then you will come to the conclusion that Jesus Christs offering of himself is our only hope to be accepted by God.

  10. Many Christians who profess to believe in the doctrine of original sin do not know what it teaches. Even more Christians are ignorant of its history and origin: that it had its roots in a heathen philosophy, that it has evolved, and that it was made a dogma of the Roman Catholic Church in the fifth century A.D., primarily by the influence of Augustine

  11. Not that I am aware of. I've read through the Bible several times and have studied it for 16 years. I know of no passage(s) that state this. In fact, there are many passages that confirm it. Specifically Romans 5:12-19 comes to mind.

Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned

Romans 5:19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.

    Hope that helps.

  12. It means that "Intelligent Design" isn't always so intelligent.

  13. There are:

"For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil." - Romans 9:11

"The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father: . . . and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him." - Ezekiel 18:20
