Is Palin a feminist?

She claims to be a feminist. Is she?

She is anti-abortion rights, anti-equal work equal pay pay legislation, anti women in combat, pro traditional family, anti same s*x marriage, anti universal health care, pro beauty pageants, pro-Iraq war, pro defense spending, pro creation taught in school, pro school prayer, anti gun-control, and a right wing conservative Christian (Pentacostal) Republican.

Feminism is about striving for equal opportunities for men and women economically, politically and socially. Based on her numerous anti-stands, overall she is not striving for equal opportunities in any of these arenas. I'd say based on her stands against equal pay she's anti-feminist in regards to economics, as far as socially and politically, she sure sounds anti-feminist to me. At minimum this woman is a non-feminist. As men can be feminists, I don't see why she thinks she's feminist just because she's a woman. I'd love to hear her tell us why on earth she thinks she's a feminist. I don't consider her a feminist because she has a v****a and got elected to a political position. She used feminism to get her economic, political and social position, but I don't see what she has done to support feminist goals. Does she secretly support Title IX? dream about women? thinking about women or being bi doesn't make you a feminist, lol

She's definitely a feminist.  Feminism is about women being able to choose to believe whatever they want.  Only a closed minded prejudiced person would try to deny her the right to call herself a feminist.

Feminists simply want women to be able to make decisions for themselves, to have equal power in the workplace and at home, ... , essentially, they want women and men considered equal.  

If you agree with my definition, and if everything you've said about her is true (I'm not bothered enough to research it myself), then she isn't a feminist.  Not wanting women to have power over their own reproductive organs is a huge violation of the idea of women having equal power to men.  

Not wanting women to get equal pay for equal work is another huge violation.  The other poster commented about the lack of experience of *mothers*, who have taken decades off to raise a family, but she ignores the women who don't have children, and the mothers who work throughout raising children.  Obviously, if a woman re-enters the job force after a decade or two off, she won't be working the same job that she would be if she hadn't had that decade or two off (unless she also acquired some higher education in the time off, perhaps).  So to compare the 40 year old woman who's just re-entered the work force to the 40 year old man who's worked consistently since he was 20 is unfair.  But then, that's why we say "equal work" in the equal pay equal work phrase.  Rather, compare the 40 year old woman and her equal co-worker, the 30 year old man.  I'll bet he gets paid more than her.  Or, compare the 30 year old childless woman and the 30 year old father who's worked consistently, except for all those absences to take his kids to the doctor, to see his kids in school plays, for his own illness that the kids brought home to him.  But if we overlook all that, I'll bet the man makes more money.  

But, back to your original question, suggesting that women don't deserve the power to control their own organs, nor the power to command equal pay for equal work, nor the power to choose their role in the family, nor the power to choose their own partners, whatever the gender, nor the power to stop being used as s*x objects, nor the power to cut their hair, nor the power to wear pants; all of these are strikes against feminism, and not in accordance with equal rights for men and women.  So no, she's a nutjob if she's claimed all of this.  But then, nearly every politician is, so she fits right in.

When Feminism (Hatred of Men) becomes this convoluted, it's best to look at the results, i.e., the proof is in the pudding.  If her actions as Alaskan Gov. have hurt men, then she's a Feminist.  If she's elected as US VP and advances legislation to harm men, then she is, indeed, a Feminist.  Feminism is so convoluted in the modern era that the consequences of one's deeds are a better measure of what one truly is.

A Feminist, by MODERN definition, is one who hates men and advances anything in the interest of causing direct or indirect harm to men.

Feminism isn't about particular choices -- as though you MUST be an evolutionist and against gun-ownership.  It's about the right to make choices for yourself.   She has chosen to do what she wants to do. The fact that you might have made different choices doesn't make her anti-feminist.

No, she's a nutjob.

I can agree with a few things. Women can't expect to be paid what men are paid if they insist on taking a decade off to raise kids 24-7. It's called experience, and people get PAID FOR THAT.

Everything else is what I mean by "she's a nutjob." You can have a couple of those and still be a feminist but not all of them.

People have a wide range of opinions of what a feminist is; if nothing else, all the bickering on this site should tell you that. Can a person not truly be a feminist because of their religious beliefs? I would assume that her opposition to things like same-s*x marriage stem from her faith. It's hard to know what being opposed to gun control, in favor of the Iraq war, or being a conservative republican have to do with feminism, unless you are one of those people who believe feminists are nuts.

I don't think she is a feminist, beyond the fact that she was able to become the first female Governor of Alaska.

With the abortion, equal pay, combat and all of that, it is all a step back for women who have fought hard to be considered for the military, control over their bodies, etc.

But looking at her past, she is very traditional. Which would explain the same-s*x marriage stance, gun control, and a lot of her views on women's rights and gender roles.

Palin can call herself a feminist all day long (did she, by the way??) she's not fooling anyone.

She's obviously not a feminist.

Feminism is about the right to make choices, but it is NOT about denying others the same opportunity.

Palin is keen to enjoy the rights feminism has given her ~ to be a married woman with her own property and exciting, well paid work outside the home, but she does not want to advance the rights of others to make important choices in their own lives even though she is uniquely positioned to do so.

That's the very definition of 'not a feminist'.

Rights for Palin and those who agree with her, but not for those who have other views on issues of importance is hedonism and ~ apparently ~ Republicanism, but it is not feminism.
