  1. French...

It's forbidden to smoke in public areas like restaurants or hotels.

  2. While many people speak some English, it is wise to assume that you will need to be able to communicate using some very basic French words and phrases.

There are lots of boulangeries, patisseries, cafes, brasseries, shops, etc.

A law was passed about smoking, but I'm not sure if it has taken effect yet.  I know that there was a lot of opposition to it!

  3. I am french and i know paris very well french people are really bad when it comes to speak other languages but in paris u can easily find people who speak english.Since 2007 there is a new law which forbids u to smoke in public places like in reastaurants..But for the hotels u can ask to be put in a smoking room so that u'll be allowed to smoke .

    Have a nice trip!!!

  4. French

    But if you ask politely

"Excusez-moi, mais, parlez-vous anglais, parce que je ne parle pas francais"

they might speak it if they know it

    a yes answer

    "Oui, je parle anglais."

    ou

"Non, je ne sais pas anglais"

  5. French, dear.  The key to survival in Paris without knowing French is to say HELLO (bonjour, monsieur or madame) when you enter one of the thousands of yummy smelling bakeries or pastry shops and to ASK the person if they speak English before you start babbling on in a foreign language!  Even if you have to ask it in English, ASK first.  Don't assume.  Then say thank you (merci) when you leave.  Basically - use good manners! lol

There is a new law about smoking indoors in restaurants but I think you can still smoke on the outside (sidewalk) cafes.  I believe it took effect Jan1 this year.  Hotels generally have smoking and non-smoking rooms.

  6. You can't smoke anymore in public places.

And of course we speak mainly french and some people can speak english...

  7. Yeah.  Paris is the capital of FRANCE and they speak FRENCH there, and yes, they speak FRENCH there.

yes.  there are panneries, and patisseries (both translate as bakeries) cafés...yup.  they invented those in France.  Café being FRENCH for coffee, or coffee shop.  As for smoking, that may be a little less frecuent than it used to be.  That would be something that could change, laws being re-edited all the time.
