Is Pippen better then Kobe?

Both were #2's and some of you say Pippen is the real leader of the team. 6 rings and never lost in the finals. kobe got swept by the pistons with shaq and we all no the beatdown from beantown.

See, this is who I've been saying to compare.  Kobe vs. Michael Jordan is just not a good comparison.  Kobe vs. Pippen is good.  Both great second options, decent first options but not great.  I'd say they're about equal.  Kobe is better offensively, but Pippen was better defensively and leadership-wise.

It dosen't matter  if Kobe got swept by pistons (Was actually 5 games). Pippen wasn't the real leader of the team. Sure Michael didn't win any rings without Pippen but he had a much better chance than if Pippen didn't have Jordan. But all that dosen't even matter because we're talking about player performance not finals. Kobe was a much bigger offensive threat, and numbers show. Kobe was much more of a clutch player. Pippen played the 2 role most of his career. Kobe is plaing #1 role right now, and led his team into the finals. Kobe, was the better player.

The simple answer is:  NO!

Kobe was the #2 option while Shaq was in L.A. because Jackson chose to run the offense around Shaq.  But there were many games during their playoff runs that Kobe took over (especially in overtime) (especially during close games) late in the game- because Shaq could not make free throws.  i think most can agree the discrepancy between #1 and #2 in L.A. was a lot smaller gap than the gap between Pippen and Jordan.

Dude- can you imagine the outrage and the sentiments if you asked is Pippen better than M.J.

Kobe has always wanted to be a #1 and has never shyed away from that.  Pippen had one great season when the Bulls made it to the Finals without MJ but really never embraced that leadership role- leaving very shortly after to be a support player in Houston and then Portland.  

You can argue that with his talents that Kobe has underachieved in his career.  But Pippen was basically nothing without Jordan- whereas without Shaq, Kobe has arguably been the best player in the NBA for the last 3-5 years (according to most GM's, coaches and NBA players).  Kobe and Shaq needed one another to win their 3 titles- but without Shaq, Kobe has still played at such a level to be considered the best in the game currently- and one of the best of all-time.  Whereas without Jordan, would Pippen even be relevant???  

So based on those arguments- Kobe is better- Pippen has never been talked about as being one of the best in the league (maybe as a defender) but he's always been Jordan's sidekick...  Kobe has formed his own identity as the best in the game right now- and he still has some chances to win multiple titles before it's all said and done.

Well look at it this way. Pippen was named to the 50 Greatest Players ever to play in the NBA. Kobe didn't make that list.

If you want stats, the six Pippen + Jordan championship rings are the ONLY rings EVER in all of NBA history to be won without a star big man.

There is no way that Pippen is a better player than Kobe.  He always had MJ by his side (not to mention several other good role players) during those championships.  

Do you forget how dominant the Lakers were before the 03-04 season?  The Pistons managed to win with a better bench, better defense, and the fact that Shaq can't guard the pick and roll (Billups torched them, and Mike Bibby scored at will when they played the Kings).  They consistently beat tough teams like Sacramento, Portland, and the Spurs, so I wouldn't take all their credit away with just one finals loss.  Plus MJ and Pippen never had to go against a team with three future HOF players.  

Pippen may be a better passer and rebounder, but Kobe is a MUCH better scorer.  I just can't see Pippen scoring 81, even without MJ and if he was the only offensive option.  If you watch basketball, you would see that Kobe is a more complete offensive player, as well as a better player overall.

My bad.  I forget about that one game, due to the fact that I was in shock that Shaq and Kobe had lost.

Pippen has more titles but when your riding on the coattails of Jordan, no hes not better. no how can u even compare the two??? kobe is wayyyy better, sure pippen is a great defender, but kobe can also be a good defender too and is a more complete player. kobe is in another league when it comes to pippen. remember Pippen   in Game 3 of the 1994 series against the Knicks. With the game tied at 102 apiece, Pippen decided to watch the final seconds from the bench after Jackson diagrammed a last-second play to go to Toni Kukoc and not Pippen. Kukoc cashed in on a 22-footer at the buzzer for a 104-102 Bulls win,  now would kobe be sitting on the bench in that situation??? NO!!! would mj NO!!! pippen just had great players around him his whole carear and a guy name MJ too
