  1. yes, without the plasma membrane, essential and waste materials cannot get in and out of the cell respectively. Essential materials which are really needed by the cell( like water) cannot enter the cell and could cause malfunction or even death in the absence of a plasma membrane. Waste materials can't get out and become toxic to the cell and could therefore cause the death of the cell without the plasma membrane. Also, the plasma membrane regulates the entrance and exit of foreign materials and it also serves as a protective barrier.

  2. uh, how could it not be.....that's like saying is skin vital to the components and function of our body

  3. Certainly. The plasma membrane is the most important component of the cell. It makes the cell a cell.

The cell membrane surrounds the cytoplasm of a cell and, in animal cells, physically separates the intracellular components from the extracellular environment. The barrier is selectively permeable and able to regulate what enters and exits the cell, thus facilitating the transport of materials needed for survival. The movement of substances across the membrane can be either passive, occurring without the input of cellular energy, or active, requiring the cell to expend energy in moving it. The membrane also maintains the cell potential.
