Is Popeye a bad example towards kids regarding smoking?

He smokes a pipe. He looks cool doing so and even blows a tugboat whistle making it even more appealing. He even sang a song saying "Now kids don't you start smoking cause you will be choking says Popeye the sailor man" Now HE SMOKES A PIPE Isn't that 2 faced? Also kids respect him and want to be him so if their grandad smokes a pipe what would stop them lighting up trying to mimic their idol Popeye? Hes the reason I'm a pipe smoker and I started at age 22 and have smoked for 15 years

I think all old cartoons had a bad influence on children. All the racism, discrimination, and gender roles. Censorship wasnt as used back than as it is now.

He is a terrible example for children!

It makes me sick to see the neighbourhood kids smoking pipes, eating cans of spinach, dating anorexic girls.

Where will it end?

Honestly? Popeye is kinda f-ed up. I mean who would take a life lesson from a squinting guy with growths on his arms and a really ugly girl friend. (not that Popeye was a looker) Really all cartoons ,old or new are bad influences on kids. I once saw a Tom and Jerry where Tom dies, goes to cat heaven and waiting in line is this soaked, tied up, sack that three little kittens pop out of.

Probably. The Popeye cartoons were made long before the relationship between smoking and disease was well known. But what's done is done. Old books, movies, TV shows -- all portray smoking in a favorable light. I don't think we should edit our culture like Soviets airbrushing disgraced leaders out of the history books.

Yes,I think you probably hit the nail.Although,he eats spinach,but smoking is a bad habit.He might influence the kids because the kids thought that everything their hero do are correct.

Popeye is still on t.v?  I haven't seen popeye shows for 15 years.  I have mentioned Popeye to my kids, and nieces/nephews, and they had no idea who he was.  I am not woried that he would give kids the wrong message, because kids of today don't know about him.

I am more worried about Sponge Bob SP, he uses the word Stupid alot!

He's only an idol to them if they can spin the pipe around rapidly fast, and suck spinage through it.

Honestly, by the time kids give in to smoking, I think Popeye hasn't been a role model for some time.

Leave Popeye alone. He was part of when cartoons was honest and watchable. Not like today's c**p. Don't Bugs, Daffy, and Porky all smoked at times too. See, honesty.

I loved this cartoon!  I don't smoke.  Never have.  I think kids smoke because either one or both parents smoke.

You as a parent have to put the bug in their ear that smoking is not good.

As far as that goes. RoadRunner always jumps off a cliff, are your kids?  Why?  Because YOU have taught them otherwise, its not safe.  Many cartoons have to do with violence if you think about it, but we don't go out and do it because it's" way out there".

You are the parent, you are their greatest teacher.

I don't think so. I think that it depends on how the kids are raised up by their parents. I watched popeye when I was a kid but it never made me want to smoke. My family often explained to me why it was bad to smoke.
