Question:

Is Porth Valley in the county of Glamorgan (in Wales)? Is Cymmer near/in Rhondda Valley?

I am not familiar with the geography of Wales. I was doing some genealogy and noticed that one ancestor was listed as being born in two different places: One place being Cymmer, Glamorgan and the other being Porth, Rhonnda Valley...

So are they the same thing or are they very close to eachother?

  1. Both Cymmer and Porth are in the original county of Glamorgan. Porth is a major town in the Lower Rhonnda Valley with Cymmer being a couple of miles to the south west.

These days Cymmer might be considered as a being a "suburb" of Porth.

Cymmer is not to be confused with Cymer in the Upper Afan Valley (which was sometimes spelt Cymmer).

The difficulty with genealogy is that olden-day spelling often differs from what is used in modern days, for example, Llanelli and Llanelly.

On the face of it, it looks as if, on this occasion, your presumption is correct.
