Is Portland an okay place to live?

Question

Any information on Portland? Good places to live, expenses, etc. etc. etc.

Also, can you give me any info on the Pearl District?

How long of a drive/train ride is it from Portland to Los Angeles?

The east side of Portland is just fine.  The Pearl District is near downtown and is a former wearhouse district that is now full of restaurants, bars, art galleries, and new condo developments.  It's a pretty vibrant and cool area of Portland, but it does not have single family housing (homes) but instead condos and apartments.

I love close in SE and NE Portland.  Close in means near the river...generally considered west of 82nd Ave or even west of 60th Ave.  There are tons of little funky/cool/hip neighborhoods depending on what you like to do.  Portland is a very vibrant place these days.

It takes 18 hours to drive to LA and that's if you go pretty much non stop.  More reasonable would be 20 hours or so.  It's certainly more than 15 hours.  Train would be even longer due to all the stopping.  LIkely a day to a day and a half ride.

Pricing is a little higher than places in the east USA, but semi reasonable coming from LA

I love Portland, but it's not for everybody.  If you're going to live there, I'd stay away from east Portland.  Most other areas are pretty decent.  Generally speaking, it tends to be more expensive the closer you are to downtown.  I don't know much about the Pearl District, but I believe it's a nice part of downtown.  Driving to LA takes about 15 hours--just take I-5 all the way down.  Also, I hope you like the rain!  (I do, and it bugs me to hear people complaining about it all the time).
