Question:

Is Quorn harmful?

My husband and I tried a Quorn product last night (the garlic and herb "chicken") and LOVED it. I did an internet search today to find out more about it, and came across this article:

http://www.cspinet.org/quorn/

The article discusses severe reactions apparantly caused by eating Quorn products and says that some people have a reaction the first time they eat it and others don't have a reaction until after eating it several times.

What do you think about this? Have you had a reaction to Quorn? It was DELICOUS, but now I'm questioning whether or not I should purchase it again.

  1. omg....

vat grown fungus imitating a meat!?!??!?

knowing this, i would never eat it.  and i am not a picker eater whatsoever.

i would advice to just buy real chicken, that already has garlic and herb seasoning.

and if you are trying to avoid meat, buy something that is an alternative but not made of fungus grown in overheated moist vats...

i am having some of the common reactions just thinking about it!!!

  2. I have eaten quorn a lot and I have never had a reaction. I don't think it would be dangerous because a lot of my friends are vegetarians and nobody I know has ever had a problem with it. I think it will be perfectly safe for you and your husband to carry on eating quorn because for vegetarians there are huge nutritional benefits in doing this.

Quorn contains mycoprotein which is a nutritious member of the fungi family. I would definitely reccomend you carried on eating it, especially if you find it tasty!

  3. It seems that most people who have a sensitivity to it have reactions the first time they consume Quorn.

Also, since that article is five years old, and Quorn just keeps gaining popularity (and Whole Foods has never removed it from their shelves) I would assume it's safe for the majority of people.

I found one article in a Grocer's trade publication which referred to the CSPI's "smear campaign," but I couldn't access it without giving them my address, a credit card, a blood sample and an affidavit- so I declined.

  4. you continue eating it until you get sick..........what can i say.......its an expiriement. and i think that article is just a scam. you should stop when you start feeling those symptoms.

  5. I'm a big fan of Quorn grounds to make vegetarian bolognese.  As a previous contributer mentioned, this stuff is on sale at Whole Foods which suggests to me that it's not too bad for you.

  6. I would suggest talking to a doctor. Food allergies are common with many types of food. These include: peanuts and shell fish. Though very deadly to the people who are allergic, the food is completely harmless to people who do not. Perhaps the doctor can test your allergies.

My friend came down with a peanut allergy and had to be hospitalized. They tested her to see what other allergies she had. She was allergic to grass. Yes, grass.

  7. I eat it once a week for the past few years and so has my husband.  Neither of us had an issue.  It's very few people that had a reaction.  There are a LOT more people with sensitivities to soy, peanuts etc.

If you like the garlic and herb..try the chikn tenders.  They are not really tenders but bite size pieces and are great with so many things.  I use them in stir fry dishes, rice dishes etc.

  8. Quorn is mold.

    Mold is not food.

  9. It's pretty highly processed, so it's probably not the greatest thing for you.

I ate Quorn a few times before I went vegan and never had any type of allergic reaction.

I think calls to take it off the market are a little silly.  Shellfish and milk are common, potent allergens and nobody's urging Whole Foods to stop selling shrimp.

  10. Hi! The article says Quorn is only dangerous to the people that are sensitive to it. If you don't have any digestive disorders after eating it then you'll be fine.

Allergies to peanuts, milk and soy are more common that allergies to fungus protein.

If you enjoy eating Quorn, and you have no ill side effects, I don't see a reason to stop eating it. I used to love Quorn- try the fillets (heavenly!) or Quorn burgers. Even though I'm vegan I just love the taste of those Quorn fillets!! :-)
